Panic attacks

A panic attack is a sudden onset of intense fear that comes with noticeable physical symptoms including: –

  • Palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Nausea or abdominal distress
  • Feeling dizzy, unsteady, light-headed, or faint
  • Chills or heat sensation
  • (numbness or tingling sensations)
  • Feeling you’re going to die

Panic attacks are extremely unpleasant and can be very frightening but are not harmful to us.   Although it can seem they last forever an attack is usually shorted lived lasting between 5 to twenty minutes.  They may be triggered by specific events or situations or occur for no obvious reason.

Why do people experience panic attacks?

They occur when we are in situations that our primitive brain considers dangerous or threatening to us.  The primitive brain is the oldest part of the brain and runs the stress responses known as Fight, Flight and Freeze.  A panic attack is therefore an intense Fight Flight or Freeze response.  During these attacks the primitive mind releases many chemicals such as adrenaline or cortisol that affect the brain and body leading to the physical symptoms often reported.

A panic attack is therefore a natural response to an actual or perceived stressful or dangerous situation.
