Chronic fatigue and Fibromyalgia

What are they?

Chronic fatigue is as it says – a persistent overwhelming fatigue beyond the normal tiredness that most of us experience most days. Fibromyalgia is a condition characterised by:

  • General pain
  • Fatigue
  • Foggy brain
  • Clumsiness
  • Sensitivity to touch and sometimes sensitivity to light and sound
  • Disrupted sleep.

Why do I have this diagnosis?

To begin with we would assume that you have been seen by your GP and that they have ruled out any medical causes for the symptoms. This commonly involves blood tests and sometimes a review with other specialists such as Rheumatologists or Neurologists.

Once medical causes have been ruled out we know know that there are common reasons as to why people develop and experience these symptoms. Ongoing pain is due to hypersensitivity or overactivity in the pain system (see Persistent Pain page) called central sensitisation. There is also ongoing over activity in the stress system that continues to keep many of the symptoms going.

The Stress System

Our stress system has evolved to protect us from danger and harm and is commonly called the Fight Flight Freeze response. This is run by the older part of our brain called the primitive brain. Many people with Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia have or have had significant stressors in their life. When we are under stress many chemicals are released such as adrenaline and cortisol that affect the brain and body leading to symptoms of fatigue and fibromyalgia.

What can you do

The aim of treatment is to calm both the pain and stress systems to balance the chemistry in the brain and body and get you back to you.

Here at MTC Hypnotherapy we use a 3 step approach to help you:

Step 1 – Explain why things are as they are and how the brain works
Step 2 – Explain what you can do about it.
Step 3 – Help you start doing it.

Your initial assessment is free and all treatments are backed up with a free CD to help maintain and support the progress that you make.
